· In May 2021, three CPI cities in North Sumatra recorded inflation, namely Pematangsiantar at 0.08 percent; Medan by 0.24 percent; and Padangsidimpuan by 0.31 percent. While the other two cities had deflation, namely Sibolga by 0.30 percent; and Gunung Sitoli by 0.29 percent. Thus, the combined 5 CPI cities in North Sumatra in May 2021 inflation of 0.22 percent.
· In May 2021, Medan inflation was 0.24 percent or there was an increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) from 104.22 in April 2021 to 104.47 in May 2021. Inflation occurred due to an increase in prices indicated, namely the clothing and footwear group by 2.16 percent; housing, water, electricity, and household fuel groups by 0.02 percent; household equipment, equipment, and routine maintenance group by 0.39 percent; health group by 0.05 percent; transportation group by 0.27 percent; information, communication, and financial services group by 0.29 percent; education group by 0.16 percent; food and beverage/restaurant supply group by 0.30 percent; and the personal care and other services group by 0.41 percent. Recreation, sports, and culture groups deflation 0.05 percent; and the food, beverage, and tobacco groups did not change the index.
· The main commodities contributing to inflation during May 2021 in Medan include cooking oil, broiled chicken, oranges, tuna/ambu-ambu fish, dencis fish, tomatoes, and wet shrimp.
· Of the 24 CPI cities on the island of Sumatra, 20 cities recorded inflation. The highest inflation was in Meulaboh at 0.79 percent with a CPI of 109.81 and the lowest was in Tembilahan at 0.01 percent with a CPI of 106.82.
